Don Mathis

Oil, Acrylic and Colored Pencil

Art Inspired by a Lifetime of Unique Experiences

Originally from the California San Francisco Bay Area, Don has been a Florence resident for about 40  years.  He loves the community of Florence, and all the wonderful opportunities a life on the Central Oregon Coast has to offer.

Don is a self-taught mixed media artist.  He began painting, sketching, and drawing in his teenage years.  He has engaged in a wide range of art related activities; hand-painting numbers and logos on race cars, handcrafting and painting wooden signs for businesses, custom woodworking including designing and creating  hand crafted furniture and cabinets, hand-crafted leatherwork, digital art, designing and creating hand-crafted metal & wire-wrapped jewelry.

His interest in oil and acrylic painting began in earnest in the 1970’s and 1980’s.   Working with colored pencil has held a special place in his heart.

Fluid art has been a most recent passion; he enjoys the freedom of expression fluid art provides, and is inspired by the absolute uniqueness inherent to each piece.

His work covers a broad spectrum; it may be abstract, linear, realistic or experimental.  He enjoys creating colorful and unique pieces.

Don is a Member Artist of BackStreet Gallery on Bay Street, and the Florence Regional Arts Alliance (FRAA) Gallery on Maple Street; his artwork can be viewed regularly at both of these locations.

Recently his work has been featured as “Artist of the Month” at:  The Studios at Jayne Smoley Design, Old Town Coffee & Gallery, Peace Harbor Medical Center, and Oregon Pacific Bank.  His work has earned recognition at local juried art exhibits;  and has also been shown at Florence Chamber of Commerce, Siuslaw Public Library, and Florence Event Center.
